You could cut off going up to the top of the stairs if you wanted to go to Heron Road, or fish in the pond. I wonder when it was closed? The ticket collector had to come down and stand at the lower level each time a train came in to ensure he checked all tickets. There was also a Taxi shed at the top of the footpath, it used to have a tower similar in shape to a wedding cake built from Mersey Tunnel tickets in it's window.
