Friday Photo: Meols Station

meols station

Here’s the view from the platform at Meols Station taken on a recent family trip out to Liverpool. It only cost £4 return for all of us thanks to the Christmas Cracker fare promotion.

You’ll be seeing some improvements being made to the station soon – Meols has been selected as one of 7 stations on the Merseyrail network to receive funding from the National Stations Improvement Programme. I can’t find details of improvements are to be made …so we’ll just have to wait and see!

Does anyone remember the short cut footpath that went up to the Birkenhead side of the bridge?
You could cut off going up to the top of the stairs if you wanted to go to Heron Road, or fish in the pond. I wonder when it was closed?

The ticket collector had to come down and stand at the lower level each time a train came in to ensure he checked all tickets.

There was also a Taxi shed at the top of the footpath, it used to have a tower similar in shape to a wedding cake built from Mersey Tunnel tickets in it’s window. I guess that would be early 50s

Meols Station holds many memories for me. We would get the train from Earlestown in Lancs to Livepool. Have lunch at Lewis,s. Then the train to Meols. Come out of the Station, turn right and Mum would buy groceries from the shops, still there!.Then down the lane to the field where we stayed with friends in a large marquee called Arrow View. Fancy mobile homes are there now . I always had a new pair of white plimsolls and couldnt wait to jump over a stile and get on the beach. This was near Dovepoint. I still go to enjoy those memories.
