I’d need to be reminded of when the Railway Inn was last revamped but it doesn’t seem to be that long ago. Well, it’s being revamped yet again and being turned into a Hungry Horse venue I think. I know it’s the only pub in Meols and maybe it doesn’t have to try too hard but for me, the Railway has always been a bit of a disappoint - the proper pubs in Hoylake such as The Ship Inn are much better. I’ve always thought that the big problem with the Railway is that it’s just too big and such it never has an atmosphere.

Can anyone remind of what (a) the disco was called that was upstairs for a while and (b) what they called the fashionable bar bit they created back in the early 90’s?

Well they received a write-up in Merseyside news section at The BBC for their topiary work of the Fab Four. Hopefully the publicity will serve the company well - looks like a lot of effort has gone into producing the green sculptures.

When I get around to it I’ll give them another mention on my patio containers blog.

Meols: The Archaeology of the North Wirral Coast

This new book by the author David Griffiths and editors Rob Philpott and Geoff Egan has received some coverage recently in various local articles.

This is the synopsis:

Meols, on the north coast of the Wirral Peninsula (north-west England), is one of Britain’s richest and most fascinating archaeological landscapes. As a low sandy promontory known as Dove Point was gradually destroyed by the sea during the 19th century, the remains of ancient settlement sites were exposed along the foreshore and in the sand-dunes near the water’s edge. Thousands of artifacts from the prehistoric, Roman, medieval and post-medieval periods were picked up from the eroding coastline. A devoted group of Victorian collectors saved much of the material for posterity, and left many records and observations, including descriptions of ancient burials and buildings. These have been augmented by further discoveries in the 20th century. This monograph presents the first modern and comprehensive study of Meols, together with a catalogue of the surviving material.

You can purchase the book (free p&p available) direct from Amazon by clicking here.

You can read more about the ancient port of Meols here. You’ll find a link to the background to the alleged Viking Boat buried in the grounds of the Railway Inn too.
